David Ellingsen

Born on Cortes Island, BC, in the northern end of the Gulf of Georgia, David has been influenced by the profound beauty of the West Coast landscapes from an early age.

He studied photography at Camosun College in Victoria, BC, where he received his Certificate in Photography, in 1997 he went on to receive his Diploma in Professional Photography at the Focal Point Visual Arts Centre in Vancouver where he graduated with Honors.

The Pacific Project originally evolved from a short series shot on holiday in 2001, this project has grown to contemplate time, earth, air and water and their relation to one another. Photographed at dusk and dawn these long exposures are a peaceful and meditative process for the photographer from start to finish, with the intent of bringing this tranquility to the viewer.

The coastline of the Pacific Northwest is photographed with a Hasselblad medium format camera and traditional B&W film stock that is processed by hand. Most of the work is shot at dusk and into the evening with long exposure times.

Photographs are produced with archival pigment ink on cotton rag paper. Prints are 13” x 13” signed and matted in strict editions of 20.

David continues to contribute editorial photography to numerous publications and exhibits his work locally in group and solo exhibitions.
